Over the last several months, many complaints from those who own or lease a 2023 Kia Sportage SUV have emerged. The majority of these concerns are in relation to worrisome and recurring braking system malfunctions. Customers have described harrowing incidents of SUVs that unintentionally and suddenly accelerate (even when the braking pedal is depressed) and events during which the driver was pressing on the brake pedal when the SUV continued to move forward. To date, Kia has launched five separate auto safety recalls impacting this make and model, but many of the braking failures are not covered or acknowledged by these recalls.
According to the owner of a 2023 Kia Sportage SUV, the driver was pressing on the brake pedal in an attempt to park the vehicle in a parking lot. However, instead of slowing or stopping, the vehicle surged ahead and collided with the building in front of the parking spot. Another driver shared a similar account of stepping on the brake pedal to stop—but the pedal fell to the floor and the vehicle crashed into the car ahead of it. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but these drivers (and many others) are hesitant to operate their SUVs because of this problem. For now, they are left without permanent solutions to these braking system failures until the manufacturer takes action and announces a recall repair.
